Our History

Remedies’ dedication to the community dates back to 1955 when a group of concerned citizens came together to address the unmet needs of individuals struggling with alcohol addiction. This group incorporated in 1959 as the Blackhawk Committee on Alcoholism.

During the 1960’s the organization recognized the growing needs of the community for substance abuse treatment services. In 1969 the Blackhawk Committee on Alcoholism changed their name to the Northern Illinois Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (NICAD)

Again in 1979, NICAD recognized the needs of the community. NICAD added Working Against Violent Environments (WAVE). WAVE provided services for victims of domestic violence. NICAD went a step further and renamed the organization to Personal Health/Abuse Services and Education, which became known as PHASE/WAVE.

In 2009, PHASE/WAVE underwent another self reflection chapter. The organization became Remedies Renewing Lives and continued providing critical services to help those struggling with addiction and domestic violence.

What has not changed is our dedication and commitment to the community and serving those in need. We offer treatment for alcohol, drug addiction and gambling addiction as well as mental health services. In addition, we offer domestic violence services, which include our 24 hour emergency shelter and hotline, legal advocacy, counseling and support groups.

Mission:

Renewing lives of individuals affected by addiction, mental health issues and domestic violence.

Vision:

Through intervention, prevent the continuing cycle of domestic violence and addiction.

Facilitate the coordination of services for individuals experiencing these problems.

Increase community awareness of the impact of these issues and serve as an advocate for those struggling with these problems.
